From Nursery to Sanctuary: Creating My Perfect Space

After 21 years of raising kids and 25 years of running a business, I finally decided to claim a space in my home that was entirely mine—a room where I could dream, design, read, and simply be with myself or the people I love. This space, once a nursery for my youngest child and later a crowded home office, needed a complete transformation. I wanted it to be a sanctuary, filled with meaningful objects and inspiring mementos, a place where I could retreat and recharge.

To bring this vision to life, I teamed up with Joanna Williams from Kneelandandco.  We had mutual friends, and I had always admired her shop and textiles. From the moment I shared my idea with her, I knew she was the right person to help me create something truly special.

The inspiration for the redesign came from an unforgettable experience I had in Paris. In 2022, I took my oldest to celebrate his high school graduation. During our trip, I stumbled upon a shop in the Marais with a dressing room covered in fabric from floor to ceiling. That room stayed with me for two years, and when it came time to design my own space, I knew I wanted something similar—a blend of European château elegance and ‘60s Park Avenue sophistication.

Joanna and I explored various swatches, aiming for an elegant yet relaxed bohemian vibe. We ultimately chose Schumacher’s Emperor’s Vine fabric in Aubergine. This mid-scale floral, with its spiraling vines and Indienne-inspired design, felt like the perfect choice. Indienne textiles, with their luxurious and meticulous motifs, have a timeless appeal that added a sense of old-world romance to the space.

The biggest change was covering the entire room, from floor to ceiling, in one continuous fabric. This created a warm, enveloping feeling—a chic, elegant cocoon. When we were researching vendors for the install, many suggested using vinyl backing to protect the fabric. Instead, we worked with a craftsman who used cotton batting. This choice added a soft, pillowy effect that made the room feel even more inviting and romantic.

For the finishing touches, I turned to Rejuvenation, whose exquisite gold hardware and lighting add a touch of sparkle like jewelry for the home. One of my favorite pieces I acquired from them is the Sedona Side Table--perfect for writing, reading, or enjoying a snack, all without resembling a desk. I'm also obsessed with the Willamette Chandelier and Pepin Table Lamp-- the brass details provide an elevated, timeless look.

The dresser, one of my most-loved elements, was originally the changing table from the nursery. With some updated gold hardware from Rejuvenation, it now has a whole new look that fits seamlessly with the rest of the design.

Looking at the finished room, I’m in awe of how beautifully the fabric ties everything together. The hand-made piping on the corners is my favorite detail, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship that went into every part of the space. I finally have a true oasis—a perfect 100-square-foot little jewel box just for me.
